We would like to invite you to attend the National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Event which will take place on Saturday, May 18th 2013. The event will be held at Madison Square Park (849 Madison St. between 8th and 9th, Oakland) from 8:30am. This event will be held in an effort to raise awareness about the prominent issue of HIV/AIDS within the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community. We also have "Strike a Pose! Yogathon" which four professional yoga instructors will lead 150 participants through a series of yoga poses to raise funds for Asian Health Services' HIV program. Not only do participants get to have fun in the park spreading awareness of this major health issue, but they also get to learn about the donors of the event, which will be a natural benefit to you. Attending as guest speakers Mayor Jean Quan, from the Alameda County Department of Public Health will be Erica Pan, M.D., Director of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention and Kabir Hypolite, J.D., Director of Office of AIDS along with Sophy Wong, M.D., Medical Director of HIV ACCESS. A number of community organizations will be present including Community Health for Asian Americans, East Bay AIDS Center, Asian American Recovery Center, Berkeley Free Clinic, OAA and Street Level Health Project, among others. MAY is an important month for Asian American and Pacific Islanders (API) as it is the National API Heritage Month as well as the National API HIV/AIDs Awareness Day (May 19th, 2013). As good health and wellness is an integral component of being able to celebrate and sustain our rich and diverse heritage, we will combine the celebratory nature of this event with some valuable health education and discussion, to ultimately empower the individuals in our community to take control of their health and the health of their family.
